NLP and Hypnosis for Pain Management
Pain is most often a physical hurt or type of disorder, or can be an emotional distress as well. Some pain is never-ending and unbearable for people. Doctors prescribe prescription drugs for this type of pain. Most prescription pills do work, but for a small section of people, they are not effective, this is where hypnosis and NLP can help.
NLP stands for “neuro-linguistic programming”. This type of programming uses a pre-defined list of principles to help define the connection between language and mind. Although there were initial doubts about it’s use for pain treatment, the majority of the medical community now concurs that it does help with severe pain control.
The difference between acute and chronic pain is that chronic pain usually lasts for more than a month and acute pain is shorter lasting. Acute pain is still severe, even low-level pain can stop daily life activities. Pain can be described by a variety of words; throbbing, stabbing, jabbing, or nagging to name a few. Pain can also be changed due to a memory, emotional condition, or physical condition. Sometimes doctors can’t even find a cause for the pain.
Here are a few techniques that can aid in this terrible pain:
RELAXATION:
Relaxation techniques can help tremendously with pain. Find a quiet room, tell yourself in a soothing voice to relax and take deep breaths. With each passing breath, relax your body a little bit more, count backwards from 10 and you will put yourself into a type of trance.
SYNESTHESIA:
This is a technique that can be completed in a very light trance. This take the approach of exploring the pain as a type of sensation. You put meaning to your pain, and ask yourself the following questions: What color is the pain? Does it have a texture? How does it move, slow or fast? What is the pain? This will help your pain to make more sense to your subconscious. Then, you have to physically move your pain to the outside of your body and it will be easier to observe. Then, examine it like it is 4 feet away from you. Visualize yourself changing the quality of it, trying changing the sound, color, or make it bigger or smaller. Now, realize what happens when you make these changes. Now that you are in control of the pain, you can send it away, or put it back into your body in a different place where you can manage it easier. Even better than that, try turning it upside down and then put it in the same place. This will have a ying yang effect and cancel out the original pain.
INCREASING ENERGY:
When someone is in pain, managing the pain takes away all of their extra energy. Basic visualization can over come this. Take yourself to a place where you are completely and totally relaxed so you can focus only on your breathing. Then, imagine there is a glowing ball of light all around your body, you can hear the noise it makes, and feel it’s vibrations. Finally, imagine every breath you breathe in is full of energy. This light becomes brighter with each breath, the noises get louder, and the vibrations stronger. As you expel your breath, imagine the pain is leaving your body. The sound and vibrations help you relax and you can feel the light massaging your body.
By using the above techniques, you can take control of your pain and ease it. These are not the same as NLP or hypnosis, but may help you tremendously.
